I thought I ought to update you people on what an eventful day I had yesterday. Well as you may or may not know, I have a stinking cold and yesterday while at work... this is the uber embarrassing bit... I fainted while getting up from my desk. *goes bright red* Now this is something that has *never* happened to me before.

I think it's a mixture of things; my cold/flu, my highly emotional state recently and the associated stress, and the fact I haven't been sleeping well lately. Anyway I went to the doctors yesterday afternoon and had my blood test results back today. My white cell count was high and my iron and blood sugar levels were low. I guess these things combined explain yesterday.

Today, apart from my cold which is if anything worse, I'm feeling pretty good. No more fainting anyway. ;)

Basically I'm working for a 'consulting' civil engineering company and they are primarily concerned with the design and planning of projects and their effect on the environment.

Typical duties involve:

* discussing specifications with the client and other professionals such as architects, surveyors and building contractors
* carrying out analysis of survey, mapping or materials-testing data for drawing up plans and blueprints, using computer modelling and design software
* re-testing and modifying plans in light of analyses results
* carrying out feasibility studies for projects, looking at materials, costs, time, labour, environmental impact and risk assessment
* preparing bids for tenders, and reporting to clients, public agencies and planning bodies
* managing, directing and monitoring progress during each phase of the project
* ensuring that projects adhere to legal guidelines, and health and safety requirements

Chartered engineers are normally involved at a strategic planning level, researching and developing new designs, innovations and more efficient processes. They are often project leaders and are responsible for teams of incorporated engineers and technicians. However, I don't yet hold the official title of 'chartered engineer'.

To qualify as a chartered civil engineer you must:

* have an accredited MEng degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering subject
* complete a period of Initial Professional Development which includes formal and informal training and professional engineering experience
* pass a professional review
* gain membership of an appropriate professional body.

I have only completed the first part of the above process, so as you can see I still have a long way to go.

Obviously site work can involve extensive travelling which is one of the reasons I decided to enter this profession.

Does that help a bit in understanding what I'll be doing? :)

Hehehe... my quiet night in last night turned out to be more eventful than I had planned. I ended up making my way through an entire bottle of red wine. :P I don't do that kind of thing very often... but it was a nice bottle of wine. ;)
